Completing the Circle, A Series of Forged Form Brooches.

I originally came to the world of art jewelry from a background in blacksmithing. This series of hand forged brooches, five of which are pictured here, is a return to my roots in metalsmithing; a completion of a circle.

These pure silver forms are forged from solid ingots, without the use of soldering, riveting, or stock removal, and with little or no finish filing. They have been hand burnished, tumbled, and then hand rubbed with a flannel cloth. I have neither attempted to hide the marks left by the hammer, nor have I used hammer blows beyond those required to create these shapes.

My goal is to not only express myself through the metal, but also to allow the metal to express its own character through my work.

These are beautiful!

Sir.... You are my hero.
:iconwillofthewisp:
Thanks. It is all about doing what you do more fully than you thought you could. Oh, and I find that braiding my beard helps, but I don't know why.
:iconliquid-lightning:
Hahaha. My beard isn't long enough to braid. Barely more than a goatee. I wish I could do stuff like this, but I've never been overtly good with metalwork and stuff like that. These are definately beautiful though.

The technicial aspects of metal are easly enough learned. What counts is that you have the vision of what to create and the determination to do it.
:iconliquid-lightning:
Still seems impossible that I could ever do something like that... I'll probably try some time in my life anyways.

All of those pieces were simply beaten with a hammer. In thate days before power grinders, cutoff wheels and the like that was how most metal objects were made. I'm just trying to be one of those people who remembers that.

Cheers.

And I thank you for it. More people need to learn that everything revolves around technology... I say typing on the internet. But seriously.... the big blackout in August? Half the people on my road were freaking out because they had no power.

Bye for now.
